A notice can concern a balance, a change to a return, an information request or processing status. Read what it actually asks before assuming that every letter requires the same response. IRS notice guidance
Identify The Notice And Deadline
Locate its CP or LTR number, the tax year involved and any response date. Use the IRS notice search to understand the topic. Keep the letter with your records.
Compare It With Your Return
Gather the relevant return, supporting records and payment confirmations. Note the item in question and whether the figures match your records. Separate an explanation request from a request for payment or a proposed correction.
Follow The Required Response Process
If you disagree, the IRS directs taxpayers to follow the notice’s dispute instructions and respond by the specified date. If you agree, a reply is not always required; the requested action determines your next step.
Check Suspicious Correspondence
Verify a suspicious notice using contact information obtained independently from IRS.gov. Do not send sensitive documents through an unverified link.
Contact Fiscora to discuss your question. Representation or response preparation is not included automatically in another engagement.
