A change in income or family circumstances is a useful reason to review federal withholding. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator helps eligible wage earners and pension recipients estimate withholding and prepare an updated Form W-4 or W-4P.
Gather Current Numbers
Use recent pay statements, not only last year’s return. If you expect to file jointly, include your spouse’s relevant statements. Bring information about other income and anticipated deductions or credits.
Review Significant Changes
A new job, a second job, marriage or a major income change can affect the calculation. A previous refund does not establish that current-year withholding is appropriate.
Check Whether The Tool Fits
The estimator has eligibility limits. The IRS directs taxpayers with nonresident status to different withholding instructions. Seek guidance when the tool does not match your situation.
Follow Through With Payroll
Generating an estimate does not change payroll automatically. If a change is appropriate, provide the resulting withholding form to the employer or pension provider and review later statements. Discuss tax planning.
